I saw one American Republican suggest LA's problems means it shouldn't be hosting the next Olympics and that they instead should be moved to Dallas or Miami.

That's Miami as in a city that's at risk of hurricanes all the way from June to November... not sure how exactly that's an improvement.

And I suppose when AI takes over it won't have much need for clean air and water...

You say that, AI requires a lot of water to cool computer data centres - significantly more than regular Internet stuff did.

This was even discussed earlier this week as the UK government want to build an AI data centre just south of Oxford despite the fact Southern England and Oxfordshire in particular is seen as a water scarce region.

It wouldn't have to be drinking water though, would it?

From an article ruminating on this: "Not just any type of water can be used in data centers. They need clean, fresh water to avoid corrosion or bacteria growth that can come with seawater."

... so, yes, it would appear drinking water is being repurposed for this.

...and apparently full of PFAS.

Anyway...everyone getting all excited about this AI thing...not at all optimistic myself, especially if it's going to be in the hands of the nutty silicon valley tech bro CEOs. I mean are we all happier healthier little people with the internet and social media?...seems to me we're just totally dependent on it and everyone is getting sick in the head. But apparently it's progress, can't be stopped, so hey ho.

Levels of the most significant planet-warming gas in our atmosphere rose more quickly than ever previously recorded last year, scientists say, leaving a key global climate target hanging by a thread.

Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) are now more than 50% higher than before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuels.

Last year, fossil fuel emissions were at record highs, while the natural world struggled to absorb as much CO2 due to factors including wildfires and drought, so more accumulated in the atmosphere.

or in a more concise way - we are f**ked, let's all go and party and get pissed.

You learn something new every day. I assumed it was just for cooling purposes. They can have the water, just don't take any of our cider!

They’ve probably written lots of code that prevents that. And hopefully prevented it from re-writing that bit or bypass it.
