There is nothing particularly special about the crowds at APE. Typical for London - and to some degree typical of UK festival shows, just more urban/less family oriented. The main difference is that APE is rather souless. I actually find crowds at Primavera Barcelona and other Spanish festival much more talkative - perhaps because APE has day events and most people close to the front on the big stages are actually interested in the band's playing - again with a few expections typical of London crowds and large venues.

I am not sure I like this new model of having a "US-indie day" (Death Cab last year), "UK-indie day", etc. Just slightly odd because I don't really identify with a particular geographical location.

Honestly Primavera is the worst for this. Just an Instagram festival.

My first APE was its first year in 2018 and I’ve been to 6 days of it over the years in total. The crowds have all been good to me. Not to say that I haven’t been annoyed by the odd group of chatters, but if I’m holding those against the festival I’d be gunning for Glastonbury first.

People’s experiences are of course valid but I look forward to any time I get to go this this festival, the days are so well curated and if there is 1 or 2 for me I’ll always by a ticket. Only issue I was reminded of this year after skipping 2023 is the horrible criss cross of clashes where if the line up is stacked you’re either making hard choices or seeing 20 minutes of everything. But I’ve personally never had issues with sound, people are always nice, the food options are great and the bar queues always short (though lack of draught beer this year pissed me off considering the prices). The corporate sponsorship is very present and soulless but if you have down time playing a game or getting a freebie isn’t the worst way to kill some time, we got a VIP upgrade once.

I don’t work for the festival I promise😁 just wanted to encourage anyone who hasn’t been and isn’t sure to give it a go, by confirming that this random guy on the internet thinks it’s great.

Another vote for Wolf Alice but with the caveat that they play the first weekend. One of those bands I really like but always seem to miss their tours for one  reason or another. Seen them once at Mad Cool and thought they were fab.

As usual I expect to miss them if they play and it clashes with Victorious.

Last time I had Wolf Alice tickets, a storm blew a trampoline on the train tracks and I couldn't get alternative ways to London. So I'd like to see them and not be beholden to such a debacle.

2) Everybody I know who does go says it is crap due to the clientele of the crowd.

The crowd wasn't my issue when I went for Strokes day in 2019, it was just that the sound system was weak. I was close to the front for Interpol and it sounded surprisingly quiet, while my first position for The Strokes was also just not as loud as I'd like.

Admittedly can happen. I went to Truck Festival that same summer and on the main stage, the sound was noticeably weaker on one side than the other.

Not all day festivals are like that. APE used to be a bit more like Rock en Seine or Primavera, where you can also buy day tickets, and each days is quite varied.

Now APE is more similar to BST and theme-centred day events. That's fine, but usually that pattern is when you have one strong headliner, so I'm just a bit surprised, that's all.

Only the first year really and even then it wasn't particularly much

There is so so much competition in London is maybe why - people would rather pick the 3 acts they like than see 1 and two acts they kinda like

EDIT: also insanely expensive to do 3 nights in london for anyone who doesn't live there

They are cursed something always happens when I have tickets. Really hoping they are active and do a tour or multiple festivals.

Maybe sometimes we just have chaos follow us around.

I remember some work stress when I saw them in 2015 that nearly ruined my day seeing them. So that and the miss because of the weather are both things I'd like to avoid for what's coming next time if indeed they're back in '25.

I had a great time tbf. Maybe I was contributing to the horror ha.

My main memory was watching Kate Nash and just the rush of an exodus when she finished Foundations.

i was stood at foals and the kid in front was so off his face on something he had his back to the stage just staring at me instead swaying back and forth.......i'm too old for sort of nonsense🤣

Feels like that could happen at every festival.

The wild lunatics around in an Arctic Monkeys crowd in 2013 is one that still sticks with me though so I guess that can happen if there's particular cases of someone being crazy ha

Arctic Monkeys had a right crowd from late 2005 'til December 2007 when they wrapped up FWN. Still had a bit of atmosphere in 2011, but died after then for me! Still go to see them to this day, mind.

I distinctly recall hearing that AM's first big stadium shows in Manchester in the summer of 2007 attracted some real nasty elements to the crowd, with some holding it as one of the worst shows they'd ever seen from that perspective.

Earls Court 2013 had a fun chaos to it. Finsbury Park 2014 had some morons throwing laughing gas canisters. Middlesbrough last year was actually pretty chill and I didn't mind that.
