Wha? Aside from the whole need to wait for the countdown and broadcast synchronisation so that the BBC could show off their world streaming service and technology...

 

I too doubt the BBC controlled the Coldplay peformance - they scarely need to with Coldplay, an already unapolegetically and finely honed media experience.

If anything, their Jumbotron thing (and the wristbands) shows they very much care about prioritising the experience of the folk there in the field.

 

You could argue Dua Lipa's smaller stage worked better for the audience at home than for the bigger crowd - but it was very much in keeping with the nightclub aesthetics of the whole performance.

Lots of acts have countdown clocks ticking down until they hit the stage.  That Coldplay used an old BBC one from the 80s reminiscent of what was shown before kids tv programming was - I think - just an artistic choice.

FWIW I actually remember Dodgy of all bands stopping their 1995 performance on the Other Stage* to get the crowd to count down and go bananas for the Channel 4 live broadcast commencing.

 

She may have only been 16 at the time but that was the point I knew that the malign influence of Emily Eavis would doom the festival.

It wasn't the old 'schools and colleges' clock that was the point - it was the fact that the performance was, for me at least, very unashamedly aligned with what the broadcaster expected and wanted (with agreement with the band of course).

 

The flirts with corporate sponsorship in the past you mention don't feel ralated to what I'm getting at as that relates to the broadcast / streaming coverage specifically? The coverage reference RE Dodgy scarely feels on anything like the scale we see now (knowing them, I can imagine they may even have been being ironic at the time), which appears intrinically embedded in how some stages are programmed and some performances are orchestrated today.

Still don't see it as any more than a (very media savvy) band knowing how / choosing to make the best impression given the platform available to them. Probably yes also roping in the broadcaster to ensure things go well.

 

Ultimately it's still an artistic choice, even if it's not the "pure" artistry that some would like.

I think they're vaguely tangential points.  Do the BBC want to broadcast the set (and have a set of requirements for iPlayer etc as outlined by incident's post a couple of pages back) - sure.  And Shakey is entitled to not play ball with it.

 

Is it something more sinister than that, as evidenced by Coldplay having a little BBC logo on  their countdown clock.  I don't think so.

No I dont think so either but Neiler was obviously put out/pressured enough (re broadcasting, setlist in advance etc) to the point where he thought nah f**k that.

I've been going back and forth on whether to post this publicly or not. But - unless they're somehow singling him out for special treatment - then whatever Neil doesn't like is somewhere within this:
