NY’s statement is the evidence. Unless he’s lying and making up an excuse not to play. But why be so specific about the bbc?

His statement says nothing about dictating content. It’s about having the rights to broadcast the show. If NY doesn’t want it broadcast that’s fine, but Glasto do want their headliners broadcast which is why they have a broadcast deal with the BBc.

Curious as to your reason to believe that other than it’s what you’d like to?

There is a growing partnership between the Beeb and Glasto.

He nearly didnt play in 2009 for the same reasons.

He has 65 years of form in not doing things he doesnt like and speaking out against things.

Do you think hes just lying? For a laugh?

I think he's being a bot of a self indulgent bell end. he cant get what he wanted ... he must always get what he wants, so I am going to pull out .. then complain on line and stamp my feet as I didn't get what i wanted,

fair enough, if you don't get what you want pull out , leave it at that. why attack the festival , he wasn't even announced. he is being like a child stamping his feet , good riddance

Someone else posted in another thread, basically Neil and the festival came to agreement and Neil was playing the fest but this involved the festival getting the BBC to change their usual policy. The Beeb refused so Neil pulled out.

Glasto should buy a few cameras and have their own streaming service.

Nobody would bother watching it.

The festival gets primetime tv at present - thats why its such a good tool for artists advertising and lets them get acts for cheap.

----

Acts who aren't up for going on the BBC are few and far between and to be honest, their numbers decrease by the day. I really don't think its that big of a deal, in 10 years there probably won't be any left touring quite frankly

wasn't the reason that Bob Dylan's show wasn't up on the big screens because he didnt want it broadcast on telly, or something like that?

cant remember if it was 97 or 98, and cant remember if it would have been Channel 4 or BBC but think thats what happened.

Only 5 songs from Neil Young last time were broadcast, not being televised used to be a lot more common.

Nowadays its very much the exception, last done for the Stones i think (might be wrong, but regardless almost 10+ years ago)

You reckon all U30s think music started in the 00s?

NO I just think that most of the youth won't care about Mr Young or know any of his songs. They won't be upset that he is not playing.  Now I am not saying all of them , but most.  I can't name one of his songs and I am 47. I know if i heard one i would recognise it.

I think Leonard Cohen had an agreement not to show his set (aside from one song? I’m sure Ive seen Dance me to the end of love on Glastonbury tv compilations) in 2008, cos he was releasing a live dvd and didn’t want to cannibalise his own potential sales.

you could be forgiven for thinking ‘greedy sod’ but he was systematically ripped off my his manager - also his partner - who’d been diddling him out of his own dosh for decades. He had to go on the road in his seventies to try and scrape a living together.

So fair enough Len 👍

Obviously not for a laugh, but could an ageing musician lose an understanding of the modern positioning of an event he previously thought he understood? Why not?

Possibly but I dont think so.

I also think the entire process may have taken about 5 minutes.

Manager "Fancy Glasto?"

Neil "Yeah sure"

Manager "The BBC have a big list of stuff for you to agree to"

Neil: "f**k that *goes online and quickly writes post. Possibly while having a sh*t. Jumps back into the nest with Darryl Hannah*.

98, can't remember if they even had big screens back then.

Cool. I can’t name many songs by Duran Duran either. But he’s one of the greatest artists of all time imo. He’s earned the right to be a bit awkward. BBC can get in the bin.

FWIW I actually remember Dodgy of all bands stopping their 1995 performance on the Other Stage* to get the crowd to count down and go bananas for the Channel 4 live broadcast commencing.

She may have only been 16 at the time but that was the point I knew that the malign influence of Emily Eavis would doom the festival.

laughed out loud at this. Well done sir!

every year it just seems to feel more and more like Glastonbury is nothing more than a reality TV show by the BBC...

Good way to put it, at least re the Pyramid.

If it does come to something along the lines of “ Glastonbury Carling” then I’m out and almost certainly regardless of choice. The “old school” will no longer be invited.

A couple of years back my immediate boss suggested to ME that we might lose the Green Fields one day. His response was “not while I’m alive”. But once he’s gone….

it is not just the BBC, it's a contract, if they had a contract with any company to show the festival agreeing to show it all gets the deal done and for good money. if it was with ITV they would not be happy with the clause saying you can show what we want you to show. the deal with the BBC gets the festival to as many people as possible.

It’s not like the BBC couldn’t just broadcast the headliner from the Other stage or West Holts.

The BBC are a public service broadcaster not a commercial channel. They should be there to observe Glastonbury not dictate content. They should definitely be showing flexibility here not blocking the performance of a major artist.
