Olivavu
Then why in God's name are they headlining the Carling Weekend?! I think it's a given that if you're headlining Reading/Leeds, you're mainstream - you have to be to be a big enough draw!

pogal
So Iron Maiden and Metallica are mainstream, are they? Green Day most definitely are, yes...but that's understandable as they are bloody awful. Edited August 16, 2006 by pogal
Olivavu
Yes, Iron maiden and Metallica are mainstream! You have to get over this strange concept that mainstream = bad. It doesn't necessarily!
A$$
I'm feeling quite resentful towards Pearl Jam as rumor has it they requested the bloody second barrier that is going to kill the atmosphere just like it did at Ozzfest back in 2002

pinback
Object as much as you want but I've got a rather pressing engagement at the pub. I'll dig out what I was referring to later. But rest assured, your comment was duplicitous.

Olivavu
Apparently six people died in Denmark when they last played a festival and because of that part of the deal to get them to play Carling weekend was to install the second barrier for safety (although all it does is mean there are two groups of people getting crushed against the barrier instead of one). It's mentioned in another thread regarding the barrier.
Calm Like A Bomb
I can't quite understand how you can attribute to the barrier to Pearl Jam anyway. The same system was implemented at T/Oxegen this year - And they weren't there
AloneInDecember
it was rock am wasnt it? i was aware that people were saying "oh if its pearl jam's fault im gonna hate them" but i was wondering if someone in a high position had said, look fellas, we don't wait it, but our pal eddie does etc. edit: it wasn't rock am ring thats another country all together... it was in fact roskilde. Pope Nora XXVI
Roskilde.
Olivavu
If Mean Fiddler offered Pearl Jam the slot and they came back with the term that there had to be a barrier, then it was up to Mean Fiddler as to go ahead or not. Pearl Jam were deeply upset and hurt by the events at Roskilde and understandably don't want a repeat. If people want to hate them for this, then that's their problem. Fabrizio Hammond Jr
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's Pearl Jam's fault the barrier will be there, but I doubt they as a band would condemn it. Personally I'm not fussed, if it makes the situation safer then fair enough. Safety comes first.

funkymunkey
Pearl Jam are no way part of the mainstream!! Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight, Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys...these are prime examples of bands currently occupying the mainstream fans. Pearl Jam are no way a mainstream band. Not a f**king chance mate.

New-Noise
Well, it's up there with Cliff Richard's christmas singles, for sure. Anyhow, I've just realised Slayer are playing this festival. If I knew that I would have suggested to the thousands of posts above that people go watch that just to see Lombardo drumming. Awesome. Now there's an influential band. Created the best thrash album - ever. And they would possibly eat Pearl Jam in their earlier days ....
