Shambala Festival People’s Assembly

4:30pm Saturday 25th August 2007 at the Rebel Soul Area

The Power Inquiry hosted an interactive People’s Assembly to bring together the views of the festival; taking in the relationship between people and the state and outlining priorities for the festival through a participatory assembly.

Facilitators guided group discussions on the main topics facing the Shambala community, including groups in the Rebel Soul main space and randomly selected participants outside in the sun of the Shambala Festival. Over 30 people took part in several phases of discussions and defining choices over their preferences.

The top two statements chosen in each area make up the core ideas of the Shambala People’s Assembly, plus all the additional recommendations can be seen on the next pages (annex A), what do you think of the choices? Send in your comments on the Shambala web forum -

Topic 1: Festival Planning & Environment

- Shambala should commit to becoming a zero-carbon festival

- No paper plates from vendors – use ceramic but charge a deposit – wash the dishes!

Topic 2: Festival Performance & Skills

- More basic and practical workshops, eg. on compost toilets

- Pedalos in the pond!

Topic 3: Shambala & the Wider Community

- Festival ticket cost should be completely transparent, including how much goes to profit, charity, artists etc.

- Festival should consider supporting local causes and people

Topic 4: Shambala Shared Values & Human Rights

- People want to maintain the low-key, hedonistic, liberal ambience

- Shambala thinking should be ‘co-operate not corporate’

Important news! Those wishing to cash in on the cheap tix get them now!!!! Same place as last time! Go quick! There are only 500 Super Early Birds @ £69, 500 Earlybirds @ £79. All the rest are standard price at £89 (all subject to booking fees). Be quick –

demand for tickets will be huge this year after the success of 2007, and we are limiting growth of the event. The overwhelming feedback from you was to keep the event small and with lots of space.

Shambala began in 1999, with 150 people in a field with a farmers trailor for a stage and a porter loo. Having hijaked a sound system from a students union, they revelled for a weekend with good music, cream teees and general sillyness. Such a good time was had that the next year a few more folk came, and each year since people have got involved or wanted to come!

Shambala is a wild, creative, low-profile, green and family friendly festival. In a world of "boutique events", shambala has queitly cultivated a down-to-earth mix of creativity, the unexpected, warm atmosphere, and quality entertainment. we offer plenty of stuff to get involved with - cinema's; stacks of workshops (dance, spritual, craft, loads of kids activities, circus performance, talks, sauna, cafes, massive site art, a lovely crowd and a lot of suprises!

The festival is completely independant from advertising and sponsorship!

The festival attracts people of all ages and ilks, and has a beautifully warm and open atmosphere. You can relax or go loco...

They say :-

''We are a responsible event: Recycling almost all waste, investing in compost loos, using solar, wind & biodiesel, and carefully selecting traders and suppliers.''

''Who are they ? Essentially a group of friends who have grown over the years. They love creating the festival, with it's connections, creativity, warmth, challenges and suprises. We all have other jobs for income, but devote what time we can to the event. It's not a money-spinner, or an ego booster; perhaps an obsession though!''

This festival does look great. But do any big name artists play there? I am guessing it would only be at most two or three big(ish) name artists who play, with the rest of the lineup being unknowns. Who played there last year?

Well, big name artists or no big name artists playing. This still looks a darn good festival to me. Just booked me ticket. Roll on August 24th!

What's happening in 2008: New and old...

Also look out for a few new additions to experience, such as the Geisha Lounge. No more secrets fro now - you'll have to be there.

Yes, you could go the whole weekend without seeing any of the bands as there's so much to do. Looking forward to this one. Roll on August 22nd! This may even overtake Glastonbury as my favourite festival.

Shame the site closes as early as midday on the bank holiday Monday though. Would be nice to enjoy the festival untill the early evening on the Monday. But I suppose it takes severalhours to pack up and clean the site, etc.
