I had this discussion with a mate a few weeks ago.

I preferred the Saturn because it was probably a more 'conservative' console it its approach to games. What I remember about the PS1 was lots of clunky, grey, hard to control and figure out games. Take the first GTA, groundbreaking no doubt, but impossible to control at times. Wipeout I never understood. One of those games (to me anyway) that was deemed to be 'cool' rather than being any good. Ditto Resident Evil (1 especially) yup, some good actions scenes (and BARRY BURTON!!!) , but a lot of running around an empty house. Wow. These games did leave more of a legacy though, no doubt about that.

The game that summed up the PS1 for me was Krazy Ivan. I remember everyone going on about it before it came out, because it had a fancy, cinematic intro, unheard for the time. What it was though was the most mediocre of all the most mediocre games every produced.

The Saturn though, with NiGHTS, Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon, all those great Arcade ports like Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cops 1&2, Sega Rally etc, plus the definitive home versions of Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2, the best home version of Bomberman, etc was just more fun to play. I often wish I still have my Saturn, and even though there's a PS1 upstairs in my flat for some reason (just left here by the previous occupant) I've never been inclined to do anything with it.

Oh by the way as I've seen it mentioned I HAVE to discuss the Wii U.

I have had Ninty since the 80's I had a NES and Game Boy, SNES, missed the N64 as I chose Saturn as above, then got a Gamecube in 2002 and stayed Ninty throughout and got wii at launch.

I have around 60+ games for my wii, its a family console, and has some decent games, but they're all virtually first party, third party, House of The Dead Overkill was very good, Madworld great, but no fucker bought them, No More Heroes had promise but was too boxed in and linear in sandbox gameplay. Thus the wii suffered big style casual shit like Carnival games sold well so thats what got made,

I gotta say I was disappointed Ninty didn't get Pikmin out on wii, Mario Galaxy was gorgeous, New Super Mario Bros poor IMO, Animal Crossing was a joke, hardly any improvement or growth to the last game on Cube, Smash Bros was the best game on the wii [oh by the way that playstation ripoff looks AWFUL] Ninty themselves started rehashing crap.

I gotta say the wii U doesn't have me excited at all, it won't get third party support in droves, it will remain a kids machine and it seems an expense one at that, Aliens and Pikmin may work well on the new machine, but I can't see a lot else, my kids have 3DS' and I can't imagine me investing in a Wii U.

E3 is gunna have to absolutely blow me away

I think Nintendo will struggle, though the Wii sold well I think the casual gamers that they attracted around 2006 have moved onto tablet/smart phone gaming and won't be coming back. I hope I'm wrong but I think the wii U will bomb, the ceo will get moved out and then that will lead the way to Nintendo becoming more like sega and licensing their titles for other machines.

Yeah think Nintendo could be in for a tough fight this time.

There is a general malaise surrounding traditional videogames and a real cynicism growing towards the less traditional, gimmicky videogame systems, by both consumers and developers.

I think the console market is heading for a crash of some sort, and the catalyst will be the next gen. That's going to put a lot of companies out of business. Only the companies capable of ploughing the millions upon millions of dollars into development will be able to compete. The Activisions and EA's will likely become even bigger bastards than they already are just to stay afloat.

Indie will continue to flourish.

Hollywood, the music industry, all over again. The execs will win, artists will lose. That's the way it is and always will be so long as capitalism is our fuel.

I don't think console gaming will crash any time soon. I think it will happen eventually with the improvement of hand-held gaming devices, but while these devices are capable of relatively little i think there will still be a market for consoles.

For example sales of Call of Duty series have increased yea-on-year, showing there is still demand out there. Consoles are relatively cheap, and if Sony and Microsoft are smart and don't charge too much for the nextgen, i can see them being very very successful.

I do think Nintendo are screwed though. With the Kinect offering a better gaming experience, i can't see them being too successful in future.

I don't think the Wii U is going to flop.

Realistically I think it's way to early to tell and as I've said before I think people are going to be eating their words making predictions of such things so early after the Wii. Everyone was convinced that after the Gamecube the Wii was the nail in the coffin.

Then it outsold everything else.

The DS is also now the biggest selling console of all time. The 3DS has outsold it in its first 14 months on the market (as was announced yesterday).

Maybe it won't sell like hotcakes. Maybe it won't be the hardcore delight that everyone who was a fanboy before the Wii wants it to be but it will not ruin Nintendo. This is not Sega happening all over again.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier is pretty impressive, a little slow at the beginning (i think thats because its is introducing you to the controls and tech), but it feels nice, and the hit detection is absolutely perfect, a headshot is a headshot.

I'm only midway through the second mission, but I like it. I have been playing a lot of MW3 over the last few days for 2 reasons - double XP (i have prestiged and got up to about rank 56 in a couple of days) and I have finally discovered the joy of "domination" - loads of fun.
