see if you want to go down that route then id say you win everytime.

cos for me, the lyrics arent what makes rufus special. its the music and instrumentation.

Dont get me wrong, I love melodies, but when you have marvellous melodies coupled with lyrics of that intensity - well, it's got me hook line and sinkered. Consider "All Along the Watchtower" and "Knocking on Heavens Door" if nothing else.

I find the Axel Rose original to be far superior.

"Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?

We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it

Lights flicker from the opposite loft

In this room the heat pipes just cough

The country music station plays soft

But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off

Just Louise and her lover so entwined

And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind"

or

"The Commander-in-Chief answers him while chasing a fly

Saying, "Death to all those who would whimper and cry"

And dropping a bar bell he points to the sky

Saving, "The sun's not yellow it's chicken"

Definately the finest verse of the finest song ever written. Another favourite is:

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?

Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?

I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it

I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,

I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',

I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',

I saw a white ladder all covered with water,

I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,

I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,

And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,

And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark

As human gods aim for their mark

Made everything from toy guns that spark

To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark

It's easy to see without looking too far

That not much

Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates

Teachers teach that knowledge waits

Can lead to hundred-dollar plates

Goodness hides behind its gates

But even the president of the United States

Sometimes must have

To stand naked.

top notch Bobby, top notch

Dylans take on a 16th Century Scottish Ballad "The Daemon Lover"

Well met, well met, my own true love

Well met, well met, cried she

I've just returned from the salt, salt sea

And it's all for the love of thee

I could have married a King's daughter there

She would have married me

But I have forsaken my King's daughter there

It's all for the love of thee

Well, if you could have married a King's daughter there

I'm sure you're the one to blame

For I am married to a house carpenter

And I'm sure he's a fine young man

Forsake, forsake your house carpenter

And come away with me

I'll take you where the green grass grows

On the shores of sunny Italy

So up she picked her babies three

And gave them kisses, one, two, three

Saying "take good care of your daddy while I'm gone

And keep him good company."

Well, they were sailin' about two weeks

I'm sure it was not three

When the younger of the girls, she came on deck

Sayin' she wants company

"Well, are you weepin' for your house and home?

Or are you weepin' for your babies three?"

"Well, I'm not weepin' for my house carpenter

I'm weepin' for my babies three."

Oh what are those hills yonder, my love

They look as white as snow

Those are the hill of heaven, my love

You and I'll never know

Oh what are those hills yonder, my love

They look as dark as night

Those are the hills of hell-fire my love

Where you and I will unite

Oh twice around went the gallant ship

I'm sure it was not three

When the ship all of a sudden, it sprung a leak

And it drifted to the bottom of the sea

Go melt back into the night, babe,

Everything inside is made of stone.

There's nothing in here moving

An' anyway I'm not alone.

You say you're looking for someone

Who'll pick you up each time you fall,

To gather flowers constantly

An' to come each time you call,

A lover for your life an' nothing more,

But it ain't me, babe,

No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,

It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

and.......

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe

"I thought you'd never say hello," she said

"You look like the silent type."

Then she opened up a book of poems

And handed it to me

Written by an Italian poet

From the thirteenth century.

And every one of them words rang true

And glowed like burnin' coal

Pourin' off of every page

Like it was written in my soul from me to you,

Tangled up in blue.

What to peeps think of his newer material? I was worried that the plaudits had been based on nostalgia, but I really rate the last three records he has released.

Summer Days, Mississippi, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, Honest With Me from Love and Theft are all excellent.

Thunder on tbhe Mountain, Workingman's Blues II, Nettie Moore from Modern Times

Dirt Road Blues, Million Miles, Trying to get Heaven and Highlands from Time Out of Mind.

All stand up really well I think.

His last two albums are, without a doubt, some of the finest work of his career. I never really got into Time Out of Mind however, with the exceptions of Not Dark Yet and Lovesick which are two masterpieces.

Modern Times is absolutely flawless, and is definately in Dylan's top five albums in my humble opinion.

Not Highlands? That's surprising.

His voice now, and the lyrics he sings have a quality of world-weariness and mental fragility that really adds another dimension.

Bob Dylan's 115th dream

Well, I rapped upon a house

With the U.S. flag upon display

I said, "Could you help me out

I got some friends down the way"

The man says, "Get out of here

I'll tear you limb from limb"

I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too"

He said, "You're not Him

and that song does mention actually creps !!

"I told them I was the editor

Of a famous etiquette book

The waitress he was handsome

He wore a powder blue cape

I ordered some suzette, I said

"Could you please make that crepe"

Come senators, congressmen

Please heed the call

Don't stand in the doorway

Don't block up the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be he who has stalled

There's a battle outside

And it is ragin'.

It'll soon shake your windows

And rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin'.

+1 that album is fantastic. When i saw him in 2004 (i think, might have been '05) i honestly wasn't sure what to expect from another album, having literally had to have a conversation with my mate at the start of ever song to decipher which one it actually was, but Modern Times was excellent. I listened to it straight for weeks.

I've just listened to the live version of "It's alright Ma (I'm only bleeding)" from the Bob Dylan / The Band live album "Before the Flood".

Shivers down the spine moment. So powerful.

Even when he sang in a completly different style like on Nashville Skyline.

There was a time when I couldn't get past the voice either, but to be honest the words transcend it.

Lyrics cannot transcend a poor voice i'm afraid.

He doesn't have a poor voice. What he does have is brilliant lyrics married to brilliant melodies which delivers excellent music. And not children's nursery rhymes married to stolen melodies and packaged for easy consumption.

Which albums of his have you heard, out of interest, to make your judgement? Have you actually listened to Blood on the Tracks, for example?
