New addition. A rescue.

Gorgeous, looks a lot like our first cat, slipper. Rescued from where?

DSPCA. (Dublin).

Now renamed Marvin. Collected him today. My first cat. Hes been home an hour. Using the kitty litter (as a dog person thats fascinating to watch) and hes eating so happy enough.

Jumping up my leg using all four fully extended claws is also a new experience!

So Marvin is over 3 weeks in now, trained (ish) and not clawing an biting apart from the odd playful knaw.

Question - hes just gagging to go outside. I've brought him out and walked him down the garden while holding him and let him go very briefly but everytime I open the back door now hes sprinting to try get out. Whats the best way of letting him out so he'll come back? Not on a full stomach? How long should I let him out for on his own etc?

I have some very sad news this morning. I woke up to find my poor cat had finally lost the fight.

She looked like she had gone in her sleep, there was no sign of a crisis, and the dog would have alerted us.

And she'd been seen by the vet only last Monday, who had told us to expect the worst soon, but that she wasn't in any pain.

We had been told to expect she'd vomit or to have diarrhoea, and then we'd have had to do the kind thing.

But there was no signs of that, nothing really out of the ordinary.

I fed her at about 11 last night, and my son didn't notice anything unusual at 02.30.

I just wish I'd known, so I could have spent her last night with her :(

Sorry to hear that Feral. What age was she?

She was 20, she'd become very frail and could hardly walk, so although she wasn't in any pain I was already feeling sad for her.

But even so, I was expecting more obvious signs that her time had come. And I feel so guilty that I might have missed something last night. She had wolfed down her food earlier that day, so if anything she was a bit perkier than usual :(

Nothing to feel guilty about! It was just her time by the sounds of it. And she went quietly in her sleep aged 20. There arent many animals in the world that get to go out so peacefully.

Just remember that you gave her a great life.

Thanks, we got her from the vet when she was 18 months old, her previous owner had wanted her put down, so I'm grateful we had 19 more years to share.

Time's a total evil bastard though.

A warning about the dangers of antifreeze for cats & dogs.

My poor cat was poisoned on Christmas Eve & despite prompt treatment, he had to be put down on Boxing Day.

A teaspoon's worth is almost always fatal, it's sadly very appealing to cats & dogs, so if you spill any clean it up straight away & try to avoid letting your pets drink from roadside puddles.

There's lots of information online, but I want spread the word as much as I can, so that Milo won't have died in vain.

I'm so sorry for your loss greenfairy.

And thanks for the warning, I have a dog that always tries to get at puddles, although I've tried to discourage her I didn't realise it could be potentially lethal.

I've passed the information on to my husband, who drives, as well.
