According to newspaper reports over the weekend, Reading Festival is to have a 'silent disco' this year.

First used in the UK at Glastonbury Festival last year, the silent disco works by giving each person a set of wireless headphones, so that they can dance to the tunes they hear while those around them hear nothing. It can be set up with more than one DJ, with each DJ on a different channels so that each dancer can tune into the DJ they want. With dancers dancing to different beats at different speeds but in silence to those around, the whole thing can look rather bizarre.

As Reading Festival takes place within the town and with houses near by, this is a way of allowing entertainment to continue after the main bands have finished, without worry of disturbing those nearby. According to the reports, the silent disco will be able to accommodate 8,000 people, and it's thought it's likely to run until around 3am.

Reading Festival and its twin Leeds festival - together the Carling Weekend - both take place from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th August at Little Johns Farm, Richfield Avenue, Reading, Berkshire, and at Bramham Park near Leeds, West Yorkshire. Festival organisers Mean Fiddler bought the Reading site late last year, securing the festival's position on that site for as long as they want.

The first announcements for this year's festival are expected at 7pm on Monday 3rd April with tickets going on sale at the same time. Rumours abound on who might be playing this year - click here to see what's what.
