Daily capacity: 38,000

Boomtown Fair organisers are hoping to increase the capacity of the festival held at Matterley Estate, nr. Winchester, in Hampshire  to 49,999 as part of a three-year plan of steady expansion.

The event is hugely popular and sold out for the fifth year running last summer with fans eager able to sample an amazing variety of entertainment including the full Arcadia Spectacular show (pictured) as well as more than 30 mini venues and over 300 musical acts.

Now a plan before Winchester City Council sets out a proposal to increase the current licence capacity of 30,000, to a 38,000 capacity this year, and a further incread to 45,000 in 2015 before hitting the total capacity of 49,999 in 2016.

Lak Mitchell, BoomTown creative director and co-founder, told the Southern Daily Echo, (here), “BoomTown’s application for a 49,999 capacity licence is part of three-year plan that, if all stakeholders and responsible authorities are in agreement, will give the festival the scope to expand at a steady pace to keep up with the demand required to put on such a creative and bespoke event.

As the event grows, so does the infrastructure, staff and security onsite, therefore it is important for us to have a licence and capacity to reflect the requirements of the site and the safety of the attendees.”

Landowner Peveril Bruce was already granted a licence to hold up to ten events a year on the Matterley Estate in 2007 and another part of the estate was used to stage two motocross events the previous year including the Motocross of Nations in September which when around 50,000 people attended.

The Bowl has over the years hosted as Creamfields, Homelands and Hi:Fi South although none of them were the size that BoomTown organisers are now proposing.

Tickets for this summer's BoomTown Fair have already reached the final tier having been on sale since November.
