This year's line-up also includesTheatre Ad Infinitum's 'Ballad of the Burning Star', Bookworks Theatre's 'The Incredible Book Eating Boy' and an opening night in celebration of Nelson Mandela, marking the parallels between Mandela’s work and the origins of Freedom Festival in the fight for freedom and equality.
Outdoor arts experts Walk the Plank have been appointed as this year's Festival Directors and will be bringing Acrojou’s The Wheel House.
Many events will be free. Tickets for ticketed events will be available here when the full programme is confirmed.
Freedom Festival is Hull’s premier cultural event and the city is already looking ahead to 2017 when it becomes the City of Culture. Graham Chesters, Chair, Freedom Festival Board said, “The success of last year’s Freedom Festival, when we welcomed 80,000 people, has been well-documented, and means there’s a lot riding on this year! There is increased attention too, on Freedom, as Hull’s leading festival event, as we head closer to 2017.
"We haven’t played around too much with what makes it such a great festival – it’s still a vast, largely free programme covering so many diverse forms of art and culture; we’re still bringing international artists to the city while strongly supporting, and providing a platform for, local talent. Yet there are plenty of new offerings and plenty of local collaborations that will ensure Freedom Festival remains fresh and continues to develop, and there’ll be lots more news on this over the coming weeks.”
