Latitude Festival have revealed his year’s Sunday afternoon special guest will be an unique performance of Atomic Bomb! Who Is William Onyeabor?
Atomic Bomb! Who Is William Onyeabor? is a celebration of the music of the West African Afro-funk and synth pioneer, William Onyeabor, performed by a collective of internationally acclaimed musicians, with the Latitude line-up featuring Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Sinkane, Scritti Politti, and Mahotella Queens, plus secret additions, and further featured acts will be announced over the coming weeks.
There will also be some special guests who will perform the songs of William Onyeabor the Nigerian producer and instrumentalist whose synthesizer-laden songs mix disco, funk and Afrobeat.
Onyeabor’s funk sound was originally recorded and released over eight albums on his own label Wilfilms between 1977 and 1985. Onyeabor himself lives far away from the spotlight, but is currently being hailed as an African equivalent to Giorgio Moroder.
In 2013, after a five-year odyssey to track down Onyeabor, David Byrne released the album ‘Who is William Onyeabor?’ on his world music label Luaka Bop, in order to introduce Onyeabor’s infectious synth music to a new generation.
Also appearing across the bill are House Gospel Choir, Slow Club, The Phantom Band, Rag & Bone Man, Panes, The People The Poet, Jagaara, These Ghosts, and Aquilo.
