DF Concerts & Events, organisers of T in the Park, have been warned they must successfully prove they are able to solve the problems at last year’s event after it moved to it's new home - Strathallan Castle or face this year's event being cancelled. Senior council officials have warned they will not allow the festival to be staged again at the 19th century castle near Auchterader unless there is a total overhaul of the event.
A Council report, (here), published this week on the festival, which made it's debut in heavy rain and muddy conditions last year, highlights traffic chaos, long queues, crowd safety, campsite security, and disruption to residents.
The report highlights many organisational issues, including last-minute changes to the event’s layout, infrastructure, transport plans and security arrangements, and repeated breaches of the event’s planning permission. Stewards lacked 'basic knowledge' about the site, and transport arrangements 'failed' each day, with hundreds left to walk along narrow country roads. They make 36 recommendations to solve issues in planning the event.
As previously reported in the Park have made a series of management appointments as part of a re-structure of the festival’s operational team in response to these problems.
The Council concerns mean that DF Concerts will face considerably more scrutiny before any future event and warns that if they don’t produce proper plans in good time, the risk would mean that the event would not be allowed to proceed.
Talking to The Scotsman (here), environment director Barbara Renton, the report's author, said that although they organised successful events for years until DF Concerts were able to demonstrate their capability to effectively manage T in the Park it's future was in question.
Ms Renton said. "Council staff will need substantial reassurances and evidence from DF that detailed plans will be prepared on time, and the event will be delivered more effectively, before officers could have confidence in recommending it takes place at Strathallan again.
"Officers had a high degree of confidence in DF Concerts and expected that organisers could manage fundamental event requirements such as stewarding and signage. This confidence has been undermined following management of TITP 2015. There requires to be a recalibration of the relationship with DF Concerts."
DF Concerts have said they noted all the points in the council report and are entirely focused on delivering a fun, safe and successful festival this year.
Much of the line-up for the event is still underwraps, Friday's headliners, The Stone Roses, were the first act to be announced with Disclosure, The 1975, and Courteeners the only other acts on the bill for the 23rd edition, returning to Strathallan Castle in Perthshire over full three days from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th July 2016.
A Thursday weekend with camping ticket is priced at £205, a Friday weekend with camping ticket is priced at £194, and a Friday Weekend (No Camping)ticket is priced at £184.
