After a year out to expand The Big Tent Festival, Scotland's leading environmental green festival, returns to Falkland, in Fife, on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July 2012.

Line-up

Saturday headliners are The Proclaimers, and Sunday headliners Salsa Celtica. also confirmed are Karine Polwart, Treacherous Orchestra, Breabach, Paul McKenna Band, Alex Reid and Rob Van Sante, Federation of The Disco Pimp, The Whisky River Boat Band, Flutatious, Man's Ruin, Horndog Brass Band, Mike Kearney Ka-tet, John Goldie, Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller, Mairearad Green & Anna Massie, The Chipolatas, Edinburgh Samba School, Havana Swing, Dennis Alexander, Finn Anderson, Kolonel Schnapps Bierfest Oompah Band, Homecoming String Band, İlhan Barutçu with the Aşk-Trio, Coaltown Daisies, Das Contras, Cairngorms Ceilidh Trail, Lion Spirit, and The Stag Sessions Band.

Sabbatical

The decision to take a sabbatical in 2011 came on the back of a very successful event in 2010 which attracted more than 11,000 people - the highest number since the festival was launched in 2005. The year out allowed organisers the time to make improvements to the site in order to further enhance Scotland's greenest festival. This work will include installing compost toilets and solar showers as well as looking at a range of other ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the festival.

Tickets

An adult (age 16 & over) weekend pass is priced at £50 excluding camping. Two adult tickets including camping are priced at £140. Up to two children under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by a responsible adult. Additional children's tickets are priced at £5 per day. A campervan ticket is priced at £25. A festival day ticket is priced at £30. There are various combined packages available.

Children

Big Tent is a true playground for children with lots of things to do such as craft-making, story-telling and face-painting. There will be cinema screenings with Take One Action and popular children's entertainer Dennis Alexander will be there with his Scotch Broth's Children Show. Street performers will amuse parents and children alike and there will be a fun-filled packed programme that is likely to leave children tired but happy at the end of a visit.

The Chipolatas, Tristan Glover, Fischy Music, Scotch Broth, and Kolonel Schnapps with his Bierfest Oompah Band.

Camping

The festival offers a family/quiet area, good facilities including a camp shop and café.

Meet the songwriters sessions

Hosted by Mary Ann Kennedy, the sessions will see a raft of Big Tent's top songwriting talent talk about what inspires their songwriting, how they write and craft a song and who has influenced them over the years in their music making accomplishments.

Food

Set in the beautiful designed landscape of Falkland Estate, The Big Tent has gained the reputation for having the best food on the festival circuit - and with burgers from Falkland's own organic beef herd the produce could not be more local. The festival focuses on local and sustainable food systems is exemplified by the catering at Big Tent and the income generated by stall holders feeds back into the Fife economy.

Organisations

Large tents around the arena will play host to a number of organisations - expect Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, Save the Children, Scottish Native Woods, Friends of the Earth, WWF and Transition Towns Scotland — all of which will have lots of information available for visitors. The 'Climate Champions Zone' plays host to a wide array of information on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable living.

Entertainment

Other entertainment will involve storytelling, demonstrations on a range of traditional skills such as dry stone mortaring, stone sculpting, potting and wood carving, poetry, interactive workshops, reflective sessions, dance workshops, face painting and a full range of children's activities including, puppetry, dance, music workshops and craft.

Getting there

The Big Tent Festival is located by Falkland village in Fife, North of Glenrothes. It's only a few miles from Markinch train station with a regular service from Edinburgh and Dundee.
