North By Northwestern Festival (NXNW) or Wigan festival of Art, Music and Literature is now in its third year and takes place over eight days from Saturday 1st until Saturday 8th August 2009 at various venues across Wigan town centre, many of them free of charge.

On the music side of the festival there are regular gigs, jams, an all day u18's event and most notably a gig on a train and barge! The train gig will take place on the Wigan to Manchester line with the barge gig (with added bar onboard!) taking place along the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

Acts booked so far include Skint and Demoralised, Selfish Cunt, The Cubical, the Voluntary Butler Scheme, Cowtown, Hook & The Twin, Wigsmith, John Fairhurst, Nancy Elizabeth, Gerard Starkie, Victorian Dad, The Maladies Of Bellafontaine, Moco, and more tbc.

There are various arts events taking place, including 'If You Could See What I Can See' an interventionist exhibition using the the town centre windows, 'Influx/Efflux' graphic art exhibition in the tunnel of Wigan North Western train station, 'Fetish Rocks' an erotic photography exhibit and the flagship exhibition 'The Way We Were' taking place by Wigan Pier. As well as Wigan's local artists, there will be national and international artists showing including Manuel Saiz.

Other events taking place include a film night, an alternative bus tour guided by the infamous Pico, poetry nights, public installations and more.

Note this is a no camping event, there are plenty of accommodation options in Wigan.
