This is now the largest free festival of world music in the UK, with a projected audience of 25,000 people. Taking place on the streets of Hitchin and organised by local volunteers, the festival is funded by sponsorship, grants, stall lets, and merchandise sales.
The aim of the festival is to provide a bridge of common interest between different age, race, ability and economic groups through community activity. It aims to be a world music festival of cultural exchange on a local as well as international level.
Last year an estimated 20,000 people came to Rhythms of the World and enjoyed a wide variety of musical entertainment involving the collaboration of many groups in the community, with 140 performances and over 700 performers on eight stages. With art and childrens activities, craft and world food stalls as well as music, there should be something for everyone to enjoy.
